Definition
A stainless steel tee is a fitting with three openings used to combine or split flow within a piping system. It is available as equal (straight) tees and reducing (branch) tees, with smooth inner transitions that avoid dead legs and product entrapment.
Common Types
Type | Description |
Equal tee | All three outlets share the same diameter; for straight splitting or combining. |
Reducing tee | Branch outlet is smaller; used for size transitions in one piece. |
Y-type tee | Branch leaves at a Y-angle for better flow distribution and lower turbulence. |
Selection Tips
• Use equal tees for symmetric flow distribution; use reducing tees when a branch line is a different size.
• For hygienic designs, prefer Y-type or long-tangent tees to minimise dead legs (relevant to CIP/SIP cleaning).
• Confirm the required standard (ISO 2037, DIN 11850, 3A, ASME BPE, etc.) and request material test reports (MTR, EN 10204 3.1).
In pharmaceutical systems, tee geometry is often reviewed for cleanability — keep branch connections as short as practical.
